Sant'Illuminato (Greenfield) is a privately owned airfield (for public use) located within the boundaries of the Sant’Illuminato Farm (Umbria, in the upper Valley of the Tiber River).
ATTENTION!! The landing strip, which is well marked with boundary markers, wind-socks, and visual heads for navigation, currently measures 550 Mt. x 25 Mt., which renders it suitable for us by ultralight aircraft, powered and unpowered. Landing and take-off by other types of aircraft is at the pilot’s risk. The Airstrip is currently being expanded to include a longer landing strip (800 Mt. x 25 Mt.) and a variety of activities are being planned (including sightseeing flights and a flight school). Landing (22) – To the right of the runway is a well-marked taxiway leading to the parking area. Pilots should be aware of the drainage ditches bordering the strip, just beyond the boundary markers. In the vicinity of the runway, all high-tension power lines have been run underground. For maximum support, we suggest that pilots telephone us in advance or contact us by radio (Freq. 130.00 MHz) prior to their arrival. If you’re arriving by car, take the E45 autostrada (Promano), exit toward Trestina, continue toward Calzolaro. At Calzolaro follow signs for Bonsciano (the Airfield is about 500 meters before Bonsciano) With a few days advance notice, we’ll be glad to reserve an apartment for you at the Sant’Illuminato Holiday Farm (half a kilometer from the landing strip).
There you can enjoy a refreshing swim in the pool, lakeside barbecues and picnics, and delicious meals in nearby restaurants. For larger groups, we can arrange accommodations at special rates in other facilities in the area. Sant’Illuminato Flying FestivalAt least once a year, generally in June or early July, Greenfield and Sant’Illuminato host a weekend festival for ULM lovers and their friends and families. It’s a great occasion for guests to explore the skies of Umbria, swap stories and take a look at the current ULM market in Italy. The program varies from year to year: flight demonstrations, aereobatics, parachuting…and you can always count on a lively barbecue with local Umbrian wine. Watch this site for news on next year’s Festival! FLYING INTO UMBRIA In northern Umbria, between Arezzo, San Sepolcro, Gubbio, Perugia and Lake Trasimeno, there are about ten small airports that can be used by light aircraft.
There are a number of reasons to choose the Sant'Illuminato Airstrip at Bonsciano. Comfortable lodgings and rental car services are close at hand. Some of our guests land half a dozen times in a single afternoon and feed their families for a week! What kind of planes do we fly here in Umbria? The same kinds you fly over there…more or less. Every pilot swears by his or her own particular model but is always equally fascinated by those of his colleagues. Cessnas and Pipers are as popular as they are in other parts of the world, but there are also many Italian and French planes that are rarely sold outside their country’s borders. JAR regulations apply here, and if you have a pilot’s license from another European Country or from the USA, you can join a flying club on a temporary basis (documents must be presented to the authorities in Rome).
There are several excellent clubs where the control tower-staff speaks English, and everyone is friendly and willing to help. Jeppesen offers a good map of the area (Italy, edition 2000, L1-2), and Avio Portolano offers a Guide to Flying in Italy, with full details for all the airports. Give us a try! Even if you fly into the area with one of the major commercial airlines, drive down and pay us a visit. Clean air, sunny skies, great scenery and fantastic food and wines – flying in Umbria is an experience you’ll remember for years.
